For the stand-alone version, you can pass a filename at the command-line or use ALT+O to invoke the file-open dialog. The keys recognized by lib openvrml should be recognized by qtlookat as well, e.g. 'w' toggles wireframe, 't' toggles texture, etc. You can also use the mouse with the left, middle or right mousebutton for navigation.
